DAVID BURGESS
(Making Matters, page 72) has won 14 gold medals and first prizes at international violin making competitions, and has served as a judge at competitions in Cremona, Moscow, China and the US. He lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he makes new instruments on his own models, as opposed to copying prior work.
OSKAR FALTA
(Leonard Rose, page 48) studied cello at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf and at London’s Royal Academy of Music, and has recently earned his doctorate at the University of British Columbia. He has also translated for Bärenreiter, and has been an invited lecturer at the Vancouver Institute.
RAPHAEL GOLD
(Hollywood bow makers, page 54) is a lead associate at Ifshin Violins, in California. He is a Professional violist, including a seven-year stint with the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra in Mexico. He holds a master’s degree in history from the University of Chicago.
JULIE LYONN LIEBERMAN
(Inclusive strings, page 32) is a multi-style Violinist and vocalist, the author of thirteen books, six DVDs and two National Public Radio series. She is the artistic director of Strings Without Boundaries and her two-dozen multi-style string orchestra scores have been published by Alfred, Kendor and Carl Fischer.
HAGAI SHAHAM
(Masterclass, page 74) regularly tours throughout Europe, North and Central America, and performs at international recital series and festivals. He is a professor of violin at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University.
DAVIDE SORA
(Trade Secrets, page 66) trained at the International Violin Making School of Cremona. He has won prizes at the Cremona International ‘Triennale’ Competition in 1991, 2003, 2006 and 2015, when he received a third prize in the violin category along with a special prize for the violin with the best acoustics.
