(Charles François Gand, page 32) graduated from the Jean-Jacques Pagès school in Mirecourt, France, in 2006. He worked in ateliers around the world for three years before returning to the family workshop in Paris. He was named Expert under the Court of Paris in 2019.
NILS MONKEMEYER
(Technique, page 86) is an award-winning violist who records exclusively with Sony Classical. He studied at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts with Hariolf Schlichtig, and has been a professor there himself since 2011.
NICOLAS GILLES
(Trade Secrets, page 70) studied lutherie in Mirecourt, France, and at the violin making school in Newark, UK. His workshop is based in Villeneuvette, near Montpellier, where he concentrates exclusively on making new violins, violas and cellos.
PAOLO SARRI
(Evolution of the bow, page 52) is an expert in mechanics, history and the stylistics of bows. He runs a bow making business in Cremona with Daniel Tobias Navea Vera and has made bows for Antonio Meneses, Ilya Grubert and Boris Belkin among others. He has maintained a blog, www.atelierdarcheterie.com, since 2008.
ULF KLOO
(Making Matters, page 76) is a violin maker based in Beziers, France. Coming from a musical background, his main focus lies in optimising the response, dynamics and playability of his instruments, to provide the player with a great palette of expressive power.
SIMON STANDAGE
(Masterclass, page 80) studied the violin with Ivan Galamian in New York and has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music and The English Concert, among others. He is professor of Baroque violin at London’s Royal Academy of Music and the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest.
