Petition launched for plaque to violinist George Bridgetower bit.ly/3dCgxGm A petition has been launched calling for a plaque to violinist George Bridgetower (1778–1860) to be installed at Bath’s Assembly Rooms. The Polish-born black violinist (left) was tutored by Haydn and played for the future King George IV at the Assembly Rooms in 1789 aged eleven. He also gave the first public performance of Beethoven’s ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata. As The Strad went to press, more than 16,000 people had signed the petition.
Lawrence Power sets up production company bit.ly/3wFioTB
British violist Lawrence Power has set up a video production company with film maker Jessie Rodger. Âme will produce films that explore the boundaries between music and other art forms, each released on the company’s new website. The idea is to bring artists together from various disciplines. Power and Rodger have so far produced six videos, filmed in and around empty performing venues, by composers Huw Watkins, Garth Knox, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Cassandra Miller, Martyn Brabbins and William Marsey.
Scholarships for young luthiers up for grabs bit.ly/3rSvFV1
The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST), a charity that funds the education of talented makers and craftspeople, is offering scholarships of up to £18,000 to further the training of young craftspeople – including luthiers – through college courses or one-toone tuition with a master craftsperson. The next application round will be open from 12 July to 16 August 2021.
