NEWS IN BRIEF

Julian Lloyd Webber hits out at post- Brexit visa rules bit.ly/2TqLqacBritish cellist Julian Lloyd Webber has voiced his concerns that the younger generation of British musicians will find themselves without the opportunities he had when starting out, as a result of post-

Brexit restrictions on EU travel. The 7 0-year-old (left) said the new rules would make things ‘really difficult’ for musicians ‘to carve out a great international career’. He added that EU organisations might ‘all think, “Maybe we don’t need to book a British artist after all,”’ as a result of the restrictions. ‘We are going to become more and more parochial and go back to how it was many, many years ago.’

Fire breaks out at Chetham’s School of Music bit.ly/2UaVHaJStudents at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, UK, had to be evacuated in the early hours of 24 June after a fire broke out. The blaze started in a concert hall at the Long Millgate campus around 2.20am. A spokesperson for the school said there was substantial damage to Whiteley Hall and water damage to the school gym.

As The Strad went to press, the cause of the fire had not been disclosed.

Violin that inspired acclaimed book in need of funds for fixing bit.ly/2UPRdadAuthor Helena Attlee has set up a crowdfunding campaign to fix the violin at the centre of her recent book Lev’s Violin, An Italian Adventure. The subject of the book, reviewed on page 94 of this issue, requires a large amount of restoration after its neck collapsed. ‘It has been lying in its case for a year or more, unplayable until it is restored,’ said Attlee, who aims to raise £10,000 for the repair.
