Philharmonie de Paris announces lutherie competition bit.ly/2Ter3xc
The Philharmonie de Paris has announced a lutherie competition dedicated to the cello. Taking place from 19 to 23 January 2022, the contest will be split into two sections: one for professional instrument makers and the other for students. Nine prizes will be awarded in all, with one instrument joining the collection of the Musée de la Musique. All studentmade instruments must be copies of the c.1710 Matteo Gofriller (left), part of the Musée collection. The rules can be found at bit.ly/3y5uhCr
Arabella Steinbacher receives ‘Benno

Violinist Arabella Steinbacher has been granted the use of the 1718 ‘Benno Walter’ Stradivari by a Swiss foundation. Made during Stradivari’s ‘golden period’, the instrument was formerly played by Dezső Szigeti, uncle of Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti. Steinbacher previously played on the 1716 ‘Booth’ Stradivari, loaned by the Nippon Music Foundation.
Online competition jury ‘watched 22 seconds of my video’, claims entrant bit.ly/2UQQJAH
Accordionist Arseniy Strokovskiy has claimed the jury members of the online 2021 Ysaÿe International Music Competition viewed the two videos he submitted in the competition’s Chamber Music category for less than 30 seconds each. He also alleged that a video submitted by his duo partner, violinist Michiru Soeda, was not viewed at all. According to competition director Elena Lavrenova, seven of the nine jury members were involved in the pre-selection, and all were obliged to give comments on every video.
