1 Violinist Eva Rabchevska, 24, from Ukraine, has won first prize at the 2021 Stuttgart International Violin Competition. She receives €25,000 and the loan of a 1746 G.B. Guadagnini violin as well as performance opportunities in Germany. Rabchevska studies at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Spain.US violinist Hana Chang took the second prize and €15,000, while Danish violinist Anna Agafia Egholm won third prize and €10,000.
2 US cellist John-Henry Crawford, 28, has been named the National Federation of Music Clubs’ (NFMC) Young Artist in Strings for 2021–23. The award comes with $20,000 and two years of concert engagements with NFMC organisations. Crawford is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School. The biennial Young Artist awards aim to promote unrepresented up-and-coming American performers.
3 Balourdet Quartet
3 No first prize was awarded at the Premio Paolo Borciani competition in Reggio Emilia, Italy, but the Balourdet and Leonkoro quartets were awarded the second prize and €10,000 each. The Leonkoro Quartet is made up of violinists, Jonathan Schwarz, 25, and Amelie Wallner, 22, violist Mayu Konoe, 23, and cellist Lukas Schwarz, 23. The Balourdet Quartet comprises violinists Angela Bae, 23, and Justin DeFilippis, 25, violist Benjamin Zannoni, 27, and cellist Russell Houston, 26.
4 Randall Goosby
4 American violinist Randall Goosby is one of three recipients of the 2022 Sphinx Medals of Excellence, which recognises the achievements of young classical musicians of colour. The award, given by the Sphinx Organisation, comes with a $50,000 grant. Goosby is currently studying for an artist diploma at the Juilliard School under Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho.
