1 At the Primrose International Viola Competition in Los Angeles, CA, US, 24-year-old American violist Natalie Loughran took the $15,000 first prize, the prize for best performance of a work by a BIPOC composer, and the audience prize. She currently studies at the Juilliard School with Roger Tapping and Misha Amory. The $10,000 second prize was awarded to American Samuel Rosenthal, 21, while third prize and $5,000 went to US–Danish violist Nicholas Swensen, 22.

2 Russian violinist Dmitry Serebrennikov, 29, has won first prize and €5,000 at the Mieczysław Wajnberg International Violin Competition in Katowice, Poland. He is a graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatory and Haute Ecole Musique de Lausanne. The €3,000 second prize was awarded to Danish violinist Christine Bernsted, 27, while third prize and €2,000 went to Poland’s Sara Dragan, 22.

3 Joint first prize at the Lillian Maurice Barbash J.S. Bach Competition for violin was awarded to Chinese violinists Lun Li, 26, and Tianyou Ma, 21. Each will receive $5,000 and will perform at the Island Symphony Bach Festival in 2022. Li is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and currently studies at the Juilliard School. Ma is a student at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studies with Pamela Frank and Shmuel Ashkenasi.

4 Welsh violinist Jamie Hutchinson has won the Salomon Prize in recognition of her online educational initiatives during the Covid-19 pandemic. Hutchinson is sub-principal violin with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom she organised the #OPatHome series, which brought music to primary school children. The award was given by the Royal Philharmonic Society and Association of British Orchestras.

• Belgian cellist David Cohen will take the role of principal cello at the London Symphony Orchestra in September 2022

• Following a probation period, Austrian violinist Johanna Pichlmair has joined the Berlin Philharmonic

• Luthier Jeff Phillips has been named associate director of the Chicago School of Violin Making in Illinois, US

• American violinist Janet Sung began her new role as artistic director at the Meadowmount School of Music in December 2021
