VIOLIN

Catherine Cho Juilliard School, NY, US (page 52) US violinist Catherine Cho has been part of the Juilliard School faculty since 1999, as well as being an alumna of the school. Outside of teaching violin and chamber music, she travels the world as a soloist and chamber musician. She is also artistic director of the Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival and devotes much of her time to community-led projects.

Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris, France (page 19) French violinist Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian is a former student of Gérard Poulet and Dorothy DeLay. Alongside playing as a soloist, he has had an extensive career in chamber music as part of the Wanderer Trio and as the founder of a tango septet with accordionist Richard Galliano. Outside of his violin teaching, he also coaches young chamber ensembles with the Wanderer Trio.

Tai Murray Yale School of Music, CT, US (page 43) US violinist Tai Murray is a graduate of Indiana’s Jacobs School of Music and the Juilliard School. She teaches both violin and chamber music at Yale. Among other achievements, Murray has been a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and performed at the BBC Proms. She currently dedicates much of her career to championing living composers.

VIOLA

Kim Kashkashian New England Conservatory, MA, US (page 48) US violist and pedagogue Kim Kashkashian is a renowned soloist, having performed with orchestras worldwide and collaborated with prominent composers. She is a Grammy award-winning recording artist and the founder and artistic director of the hunger relief initiative Music for Food. She teaches both viola and chamber music at the New England Conservatory.

David Wallace Berklee College of Music, MA, US (page 47) US violist David Wallace is chair of the Berklee College of Music’s string department. As well as teaching viola, he is a composer, having written for the New York Philharmonic and Juilliard School. He performs as a soloist and chamber musician around the world, and plays in various rock and jazz bands.

Nobuko Imai Reina Sofía School of Music, Madrid, Spain (page 34) Japanese violist Nobuko Imai is a professor of violin at various schools across Europe. As well as performing solo with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and London Symphony, she is a renowned chamber musician. She was a former member of the Vermeer and Michelangelo quartets and has taken the roles of artistic director at various festivals worldwide.

CELLO

Julian Smiles Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Sydney, Australia (page 10) As well as performing as a soloist and chamber musician, Australian cellist Julian Smiles has held principal roles in orchestras such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Sydney Symphony. He is a former student of János Starker at Indiana University. In 1995, he formed the Goldner String quartet and has taught cello at the Sydney Conservatorium since 2013.

Matt Haimovitz McGill University Schulich School of Music, Montreal, Canada (page 14) Israeli cellist Matt Haimovitz is an award-winning recording artist, soloist, chamber musician and cello professor. Making his debut at the age of 13 with the Israel Philharmonic, he has since played with orchestras around the world. He is a graduate of Harvard University and the Juilliard School, where he studied under Leonard Rose.

Hannah Roberts Royal Academy of Music, London, UK (page 38) British cellist Hannah Roberts teachers as various conservatoires across the UK, as well as maintaining a career as a soloist and chamber musician. She has played with such orchestras as the London Symphony Orchestra and Manchester Camerata, of which she was principal cellist. She is a former student of both William Pleeth and Ralph Kirshbaum.

Enno Senft Royal College of Music, London, UK (page 37) German double bassist Enno Senft is principal bass of the London Sinfonietta and Chamber Orchestra of Europe. He has also played with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and London Symphony. As a champion of contemporary music, he has also worked with prominent composers. Outside of the RCM, he tutors at the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the European Union Youth Orchestra.

Christine Hoock Universität Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria (page 11) As well as teaching bass in Salzburg, German solo, chamber and orchestral bassist Christine Hoock tutors at festivals and masterclasses around the world. As a player, she has held principal bass positions, played alongside renowned musicians and won international competitions. She has also recorded several albums and often ventures into jazz, electronic and world music.

Maren Reck Malmö Academy of Music, Malmö, Sweden (page 34) US double bassist Maren Reck has been a member of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra (MSO) since 2007 and has since won the role of principal bass. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and University of Southern California. She has also worked with various European orchestras and festivals throughout her time at the MSO.
