A stand built for portability
FEATURED PRODUCT
With its new Smart Stand, Dolfinos has set out to solve the perils often associated with standard portable stands. ‘Normal stands are always too heavy and too long,’ says head of research Michael Wiener. ‘Users want a very portable stand, and to do that you need something half the size and weight.’ With its patented design, the new stand weighs less than 450g and, when folded, measures 28cm. Both measurements are about half those of a regular stand.
The Smart Stand consists of several parts, all separately replaceable. To assemble it, the user screws three feet to the bottom of an extendable rod. An adapter is already fitted to the rod’s top, to which the user can attach a smartphone or tablet, both held in place using a tablet holder that is sold separately.
Users can also attach a bespoke table, which measures 50cm and fits three A4 pages. It is made up of a fabric that slips over a light frame to become the table’s back. When disassembled, the stand fits into a small fabric bag. A pencil holder and grip band, to secure sheet music to the bottom of the table, can be purchased separately.
The materials were chosen carefully to reduce weight. The nylon Oxford fabric can sustain up to 1kg; Wiener describes it as ‘extremely light, stretchy, durable and washable’. The rod, legs and table frame are made of a black anodised aluminium– magnesium alloy. The material does not rust, making the stand suitable for playing outside. The table’s frame also has laser-cut holes to reduce the amount of material and therefore weight.
‘We have beaten some records with this stand; it’s groundbreaking,’ Wiener claims. ‘It’s not just a gadget – people have told us that they dream of something small, light and compatible with their devices. We have done that.’
