1 The Animato Quartet has been awarded the Kersjes Prize, which comes with a cash prize of €50,000. The Netherlands-based quartet comprises violinists Inga Våga Gaustad, 25, and Tim Brackman, 30, violist Elisa Karen Tavenier, 27, and cellist Pieter de Koe, 29. The prize is given by the Kersjes Fund, which aims to support young talent through scholarships and awards.
2 The violin and string quartet division prizes at the Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition were awarded in September. In the violin division Seina Matsuoka, 30, from Japan won first prize and €25,000, while Elvin Hoxha Ganiyev, 24, of Turkey and Azerbaijan took home the €18,000 second prize, and Jakub Staszel, 20, from Poland, won third and €10,000. No first prize was awarded in the string quartet division. Instead, the Turicum Quartet took second prize and €26,000 and the Neuma Quartet won third prize and €14,000.
3 Canadian cellist Luka Coetzee, 18, won first prize, worth €20,000, at the International Paulo Cello Competition. She is currently studying at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. The €15,000 second prize went to Serbian cellist Petar Pejčić, 21, and the €12,000 third prize went to Swiss cellist Samuel Niederhauser, 25.
4 The Rilian Trio won the top prize of €15,000 at the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition held in Trondheim, Norway. The trio consists of violinist Daniel Dastoor, 28, cellist David Liam Roberts, 23, and pianist Godwin Friesen, 25. Second prize and €10,000 went to Trio Tokava, while third prize and €5,000 went to Trio Incendio.
