LUIZ AMORIM

(Making Matters, page 68) began his making and restoration career in 1995. He has worked on many Italian masterpieces, including instruments by Stradivari, Guarneri ‘del Gesù’ and Storioni. His focus is on preserving their authenticity and extracting their best sound.

ROBERTO JARDÓN RICO

(‘Boissier, Sarasate’ violin, page 26) is a violin maker and restorer based in Asturias, Spain. He has been making violins and violas for more than 30 years and has participated in many experiments in violin acoustics, his passion.

TULLY POTTER

(All-female string quartets, page 44) was born in Edinburgh in 1942 but brought up in South Africa. He has been in love with the human voice and the sound of stringed instruments for almost all of his life. He is preparing two books on string quartet ensembles and has just published his first poetry collection for 48 years.

KAREN A. SHAFFER

(Maud Powell and Sibelius, page 52) is the biographer of American violinist Maud Powell and founder/president of the Maud Powell Society for Music and Education. As co-founder with Pamela Blevins of ‘Signature, Women in Music’, she is a strong advocate for writing women back into music history.

GEORGE STOPPANI

(Analysing the ‘Boissier, Sarasate’, page 34) has been making modern and period instruments since the mid-1970s, and is the founder of Real Guts Strings, a quasi-cooperative group which makes strings for historic instruments. He is also a researcher focused mainly on the structural acoustics of violins.

WILLIAM SZOTT

(Trade Secrets, page 62) trained as a violin maker at Merton College, London, before working for a number of years at J.P. Guivier. He now has his own shop in Manchester, UK, serving musicians in the north of England.
