Borletti-Buitoni Trust announces awards and fellowships bit.ly/4aqgMQl
The Mithras Trio and the Leonkoro Quartet have each been announced as recipients of Borletti-Buitoni Trust (BBT) awards. Both ensembles receive £30,000. Violinist Hana Chang and double bassist Will Duerden have also been announced as winners of BBT fellowships, each worth £20,000. The awards and fellowships are announced every other year on 17 March to mark the birthday of Franco Buitoni (1934-2016), co-founder of BBT with his wife Ilaria Borletti Buitoni.

The Guarneri ‘del Gesú’ violin known as ‘Il Cannone’ (left) has undergone
X-ray micro-analysis in an effort to help conserve the historic instrument and to understand its unique sound qualities better. The 1743 violin was insured for €30 million for the trip from Genoa to Grenoble where it was scanned at the European
Synchrotron Radiation Facility. A 3D model will eventually be made.

At this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, The Last Repair Shop, a film about the craftspeople who oversee the maintenance of over 80,000 instruments for schoolchildren in Los Angeles, won the award for Best Documentary Short Film. The documentary has also spurred on a $15 million campaign by the school district to invest in the repair workshops and its technicians.
