HUBERT DE LAUNAY

(The Strad Calendar 2022, page 56) is a violin maker, dealer and expert based in Utrecht. He has worked for several shops in London and Amsterdam focusing on high-end restoration. He is currently planning a book on the 17th-and 18th-century Dutch makers, with the help of the Hendrik Jacobs Foundation.

JULIA FISCHER

(Masterclass, page 74) is one of the world’s leading concert violinists. In the 2021–22 season she serves as artist-inresidence with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. She plays a 1742 G.B. Guadagnini violin as well as a 2018 instrument by Philipp Augustin.

MISHA GALAGANOV

(Technique, page 84) is professor of viola and chair of strings at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX, US. He has performed and taught in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas, and has premiered more than 20 works written for him by composers from many parts of the world.

KAREN GOMYO

(Opinion, page 24) is a Japanese-born violinist now based in Berlin. Her latest album, A Piazzolla Trilogy, is now available on the BIS label. She plays the 1703 ‘ex-Foulis’ Stradivari violin.

CHRISTOPHER NUPEN

(Nupen and Du Pré, page 44) is an award-winning documentary maker. He has made more than 80 films on classical music and musicians, ranging from Jacqueline du Pré, Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman and Nathan Milstein to Vladimir Ashkenazy and Daniil Trifonov.

BALTHAZAR SOULIER

(Historical varnishes, page 38) is a conservator and expert in ancient stringed instruments based in Paris. Following a classical training in violin making and a masters in painting conservation, he specialises in the analytical study of the materiality of historical violins.
