1 South Korean violinist Inmo Yang, 26, has won first prize at the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in Helsinki, Finland. The prize comes with €30,000 and the loan of a Guadagnini violin. Yang currently studies with Antje Weithaas at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. US violinist Nathan Meltzer, 21, won the €20,000 second prize, while Ukraine’s Dmytro Udovychenko, 22, was awarded third prize and €15,000.

2 The Leonkoro Quartet has won first prize and €20,000 at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in Bordeaux, France. The foursome also received the audience prize and young listener’s prize. The group comprises violinists Jonathan Schwarz, 26, and Amelie Wallner, 23, violist Mayu Konoe, 24, and cellist Lukas Schwarz, 24. The quartet is tutored by the Artemis Quartet at the Berlin University of the Arts.

3 The American Terra Quartet has won the Grand Prize Medal, worth $10,000, at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in South Bend, IN, US. The group also won the senior string division’s gold medal and $3,500. The quartet comprises violinists Harriet Langley, 29, and Amelia Dietrich, 28, violist Ramón Carrero Martínez, 29, and cellist Geirþrúður Anna Guðmundsdóttir, 27.

4 On 18 October at the Stockholm Concert Hall in Sweden, the 2022 Birgit Nilsson Prize, worth $1,000,000, will be awarded to cellist Yo-Yo Ma. He will become the first instrumentalist to receive the prize, which celebrates outstanding achievement in classical music. Susanne Rydén, president of the Birgit Nilsson Foundation, said that Ma’s ‘commitment to music helps us to imagine and build a strong society’.

• Taiwanese violist Ming-Yu Hsu, 22, will begin as the Kansas City Symphony’s new principal viola at the start of the 2022–23 season
