RAINERBEILHARZ (Making Matters, page 68) is a violin maker of 40 years’ experience, specialising in new instruments. He is a multiple medal winner at past VSA competitions and is a member of EILA and the AVMA. He lives in Castlemaine in Australia.

DAVID GILLHAM (Technique, page 78) is associate professor of violin at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He is a member of the Vetta chamber players, the Archytas Ensemble and the Ridge Piano Trio, and was second violinist of the Arianna Quartet from 2005 to 2012.

BARBARA MEYER (Girolamo Amati II violin 1671, page 24) trained as a luthier in Cremona and Bologna. Awarded a German masters in violin making, 1996, and an MA in 2007 from the University of the Arts, London, she has enjoyed an international career. In 2013 she joined the Royal Academy of Music as curator of stringed instruments.

YURI POCHEKIN (In Focus, page 59) is a Russian-born violin maker currently based in Madrid. He has made around 300 violins, violas and cellos, and has been a jury member on violin making competitions including the Wieniawski in Poznań and the Cremona ‘Triennale’ in Italy.

JEFFREY SOLOW (Bach Cello Suites, page 38) has appeared as a solo cellist with several of the world’s leading orchestras. Two of his many recordings were nominated for Grammy awards. He is president of the Violoncello Society of New York and past president of the American String Teachers Association.

MATT WEHLING (François-Nicolas Voirin, page 50) is a US bow maker who trained in France for five years under the guidance of master makers Georges Tepho and Benoît Rolland. His awards include five gold medals from the Violin Society of America, as well as first- and second-place medals in the 2011 Étienne Vatelot competition in Paris.
