(Opinion, page 23) is a double bassist who has concertised in North America, Europe and the Far East. A former member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he is starting his 46th season as principal bass of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

TREVOR DAVIS

(Trade Secrets, page 64) is a violin maker specialising in upright basses and cellos. He has earned gold and silver medals from the Violin Society of America and International Society of Bassists. He aims to integrate both traditional and state-of-the-art violin making techniques into the bass world.

ERNST FUCHS

(In Focus, page 61) is a violin maker and restorer who has been based in Ravensburg, Germany, for almost 40 years. Having started as a maker of new instruments, he now works mainly on restoring and repairing instruments and bows.

ALEX KANZIAN

(The Viennese double bass, page 32) is a double bass maker at Kanzian & Traunsteiner in Vienna, Austria, a workshop entirely focused on the construction and repair of fine double basses. He is a specialist in sound set-up, German bass bows and Viennese basses.

WIM RAYMAEKERS

(Making Matters, page 70) studied art history at the University of Louvain and violin making in Puurs, Belgium. He has worked as a restorer for the Museum Vleeshuis in Antwerp. From 2012 to 2017 he taught violin making, organology and restoration techniques at the School of Arts of the University College Ghent.

HELENA RUINARD

(Masterclass, page 72) performs as a cellist with chamber orchestras in London and the north of England and holds a teaching position with In Harmony Opera North. She regularly contributes to British music industry publications such as Classical Music, Music Teacher and The Musician.
