VIOLIN STRINGS
Two in one A high-end string set for an alternative sound
Jargar Strings aims to satisfy two goals with its new Evoke set for violin: easy playability for high-level students and a high-end string that can be used by all. ‘The general tendency these days with students is they want something easy to play, but at the same time powerful,’ says Erik Martens, administrative director of the Danish string manufacturer. ‘Here, you have a super good bow response and you are able to modulate the sound without pressing too hard.’
As for the company’s goal to produce a high-end string, this is mainly in comparison to its Violin Superior set. ‘We wanted a slightly different sound perspective from the Superior. The Evoke is a little more brilliant, without giving up on warmth.’ The Evoke, although similar if not higher in level to the Superior, comes at a lower price point. ‘We wanted to make it affordable to the target group,’ says Martens.
To achieve a more brilliant sound, the whole set has a relatively high tension. With its steel-core E string, ‘it was a combination of choosing the right dimensions and diameter so that you have power without overwhelming the instrument.’ In the two synthetic-core lower strings, silver winding was used to achieve a ‘brilliant, ringing sound’. For the aluminium alloy-wound, synthetic-core A string, ‘the goal was finding a combination of materials that fill the gap between the E and D, while still keeping a brilliant sound,’ says Martens.
‘With the Evoke, we wanted to achieve easy playability with a brilliant, yet still warm sound,’ he continues. ‘Even though strings are a very personal thing, from the feedback we’ve received, we’ve done what we set out to do.’
