MATTHIEU BESSELING
(In Focus, page 59) has been working as a luthier in Amsterdam since 1977. He has made more than 400 violins, violas and cellos that are now played all over the world. He also has a degree in medicine and has been a professional viola player.
GIACOMO FIOCCO
(Stradivari’s ground, page 52) is the research activities supervisor at the Arvedi Laboratory of the University of Pavia. He specialises in non- and micro-invasive investigations for the study of cultural heritage, with a particular focus on the materials of musical instruments.
GREG SAPP
(Trade Secrets, page 62) graduated from the Chicago School of Violin Making. In 2006 he opened a violin shop with his wife Mel in Batavia, IL, US. He frequently teaches at the Oberlin Restoration Workshop and was awarded a gold medal for his cello bridge at the 2022 International Violin Bridge Competition.
ALEXANDRA SCOTT
(Technique, page 78) studied double bass at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She holds the position of sub-principal double bass with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since 2012 she has been professor for double bass at the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe.
PAVEL ŠPORCL
(Masterclass, page 70) is a Czech violinist. He studied with Václav Snítil, Itzhak Perlman, Eduard Schmieder and Dorothy DeLay. His recordings appear on Hänssler Classic, Universal Music, Supraphon and Cedille Records. He plays a blue violin made by Jan Špidlen.
VLADO TILEV
(Making Matters, page 68) is a violin maker based in Sofia, Bulgaria. He originally graduated as a cellist and has been making violins since 1995. He has been an assistant in the studios of several renowned German master luthiers, and won two awards at the 2022 Violin Society of America’s making competition.
