CHRISTIAN BAYON

(Making Matters, page 72) is a French violin maker based in Lisbon, Portugal. Since 2003 he has devoted himself to making violins, violas and cellos. He has been a member of the International Society of Violin and Bow Makers since 1997.

JOHN DILWORTH

(In Focus, page 63) is a British luthier who has been writing articles on instruments and violin making for The Strad for more than 30 years. His work has also been published in books and journals worldwide.

CHRISTIAN HOYER

(Elias Placht, page 56) studied history and politics in Marburg, London, Keele and Erlangen. He comes from a family of violin and bow makers and is deputy director of the city museum and city archive in Herzogenaurach. In Bubenreuth he works on the board of the museum association.

DANIEL KURGANOV

(Masterclass, page 74) is a Boston-based violinist steeped in the nuances of violin playing from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Trained in Zurich by a Heifetz protégé, he is equally dedicated to education, leading workshops globally, and running a widely followed YouTube channel on the craft.

KATHARINA NEUMÜLLER

(Trade Secrets, page 66) trained at the Mittenwald School of Violin Making and opened her own workshop in Lenggries, south of Munich, in 2013. She specialises in making new violins, violas and cellos, as well as child-size violins and violas.

SIMON ROWLAND-JONES

(Technique, page 80) is a performer, editor, composer and teacher, also known for his viola transcriptions of Bach and as editor of the new Peters Urtext Edition of the Haydn String Quartets. He is increasingly occupied with composing and is joint director of the North Norfolk Music Festival.
