CELLO CASE
Worth its weight
Gewa reveals its lightest cello case yet
Gewa’s new High Performance Carbon 2.7 cello case is now the lightest in the company’s cello range. To offer both lightness and strength, the case is made of high-performance carbon fibre using Japanese technology. The 2.7kg case is 200g lighter weighs 200g less than Gewa’s previous lightest model. To reduce the weight further, the case’s interior is lined with a thin foam layer instead of fabric. ‘It reduces weight but is still protective and won’t scratch anything,’ says the brand’s marketing manager Jan Linda.
Various features are new to Gewa’s entire range, such as the magnetic carbon lock on the adjustable neck strap. The case’s six external locks are also new. ‘The player just needs to press them to lock and unlock the case. So it’s very easy and comfortable to use,’ says Linda. Finally, instead of utilising a separate seal to close the case, one shell fits over the other. This is in line with Gewa’s larger goal to make the overall design ‘very clean and simple, while also being comfortable.’
Inside the case, four velour-lined foam pads suspend the instrument at the bottom and top. Another four velcro-lined foam pads are positioned along the edge of the cello to allow for a close fit. Four additional, thicker pads are supplied with the case, which players can replace themselves ‘to fit the size of their cello perfectly,’ says Linda. The case also features two magnetic bow holders, two leather handles, two back straps and an accessory pocket. It comes in black, grey and metallic dark blue.
‘It’s not only one of the lightest cases in the market,’ Linda adds, ‘We wanted to ensure that among the absolute lightest cases, it is also the sturdiest one. Both the material and the new technology are extremely special.’

CELLO BUGGIE
READY TO ROLL
R.C. Williams has released a cello version of its Bass Buggie. It is used to pull and roll the instrument along instead of carrying it, reducing strain and risk of injury. The design is almost identical to the bass version and it can be used with the cello either in or out of its case. The cello is placed on its side and strapped in at the neck.
