1 Japanese cellist Michiaki Ueno, 25, has won the Geneva International Competition’s cello division and CHF20,000 (£16,000), as well as the Concerts de Jussy Prize (CHF3,000) and Young Audience Prize (CHF1,000). Ueno is currently an artist-in-residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium. Canadian Bryan Cheng, 24, won the CHF12,000 second prize, while the third place and CHF8,000 went to 15-year-old South Korean cellist Jaemin Han.

2 US violinist Karisa Chiu, 22, has won first prize and KRW30,000,000 (£18,800) at the IsangYun Violin Competition in Tongyeong, South Korea. Chiu is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. Second and third prizes, worth KRW20,000,000 and KRW10,000,000 respectively, went to South Koreans Jueun Jeong, 25, and Nakyung Kang, 18.

3 Japan’s Quartet Integra has won the €12,000 first prize in the Bartók World Competition’s string division in Budapest, Hungary. Formed in 2015, the quartet comprises violinists Kyoka Misawa and Rintaro Kikuno, both 23, violist Itsuki Yamamoto and cellist Anri Tsukiji, both 25. Second place and €8,000 went to the Chaos Quartet, from Austria, while the €4,000 third prize was awarded to the Sonoro Quartet from Belgium.

4 US violinist Hilary Hahn has won the Herbert von Karajan Award in Salzburg, Austria. The award is worth €50,000 and celebrates a musician whose artistic achievements have received worldwide recognition. The prize reflects Hahn’s successful career including three Grammy Awards and a commitment to sharing classical music with the global community.
